In 12th century Italy, Arab culture and language persist under the Norman occupation. Here, Sultan Rujari surrounds himslef with brilliant minds, among them the cartographer Muhammad al-Idrisi, a scientist whose legacy persists to this day. Faithful to the Sultan, al-Idrisi finds his loyalties torn when his friends begin to plot resistance to Norman rule whilst political turmoil mounts and threatens to tear the island apart.
