By noted Indian law academic Steven T. Newcomb comes this book that provides a startling challenge to US federal law and policy. Using history and cognitive theory the author demonstrates how U.S Government officials have used religious concepts of Christendom to justify the taking of Indian lands and the denial of Indian independance. Newcomb demonstrates with clear examples throughout history of how the U.S utilised the 'Old Testament' narrative of the 'chosen people' having a 'divine right to the promised land'.

He further elaborates on the continued U.S reliance of ancient religious distinctions between Christians and 'heathens' violates the democratic principle of seperation of Church and state. Overall this book is a landmark and much needed addition to Native American and legal scholarship.
