The present state of Islamic-Christian relations in Europe is characterized by new confrontationist schemes that are nurtured by the prejudices preserved from earlier centuries. It is against this background that we must evaluate the future relations between Muslims and Christians in Europe. In view of of the present tensions, the guideline should not be Huntington's paradigm of a "clash of civilizations". As we have seen from recent political discourse, this theory mainly serves the interest of those who try to justify a new dominationist scheme vis-a-vis Islam in connection with conflicts in the Middle East, in particular the Arab-Israeli conflict.
