Looking up, this Dīn of ours has been described as "a good tree whose roots are firm and whose branches reach to heaven" [Qurʾān 14:24]. Yet before naturally reaching for the fruits in Paradise, we must understand their root system. Before you here is a microscope focussing on the tendrils of the roots of Muslim law—the Uṣūl al-Fiqh. The storms of the age and the decay of Western values can be averted by grounding one’s faith: Islam. Dr. Eldoghim, renowned curator of Muslim manuscripts, opens with the history of Uṣūl al-Fiqh and the scholars who planted and nursed its growth. The second part examines its root concepts and their down to earth application within legal theory. The value of planting such a tree—in the times we live in—should not be lost on students or anyone interested in deepening an understanding of the protective shade that tree provides.
