The intellectual roots of Islam are as deep as its hold over the beliefs of its followers. Under the influence of the colonial powers, however, many Muslims accepted western intellectual supremacy while retaining their traditional Islamic beliefs. This has given the post-colonial world of Islam, laced with nationalism, secularism, capitalism and marxism, its particular flavour.
The post-colonial order was inherently unstable and was bound to collapse. It is doing so everywhere. The thrust to replace it is now coming from a newly invigorated Islamic movement. Though deeply influenced by the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the movement is neither Shi'i nor Sunni. Its influence is worldwide.
Inevitably this new dynamism in the world of Islam has found an echo among Muslims living in the west. This annual anthology brings together writers representing the new mood in Islam.
