The Hindostanee Coffee House was unique in London and, therefore, to all Europe. The Times announced that its Indian dishes had been "allowed by the greatest epicures to be unequalled to any curries ever made in England", and the coffee house had opened at 34 George Street to very great fanfare. Britons who travelled to India for fame and fortune were disparagingly called Nabobs in police society when they returned. These men were attracted to the coffee house, and enjoyed eating the spicy food and smoking the ornate hookahs, especially in the dark, dank days of winter.
